About the Namesake:

Ruth J. Lavine (LLB 1943) was a model of perseverance, a pioneer in legal practice, and an inspiration for generations of women in law. During her trailblazing career, Ruth was a partner at Fain, Lavine, Kaufman and Young; she was elected the first woman president of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation and served as president of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles; and she was founder, along with her husband Richard (LLB 1942), of the Richard and Ruth Lavine Family Foundation. Until her passing in 2023, Ruth remained an active, dedicated supporter of USC Gould and its students — leaving an enduring legacy through the establishment of the Ruth J. Lavine ’43 Women in Law Symposium.
